NEWSHOSTING CLIENT

A polished beginner client that only ever works for one company. No API, no RSS, no way to run it on a NAS, and no life after the subscription that unlocks it. Judged as software you can own, it is the weakest proposition in this table.

NZB files are supported, and that is roughly the warmth the feature gets. An NZB is the index card for a Usenet post: it lists every article fragment so a client can fetch and reassemble them, and it is the format the entire independent ecosystem trades in. Here it is plainly the secondary door, because the built-in search is the path the interface wants you on. Imports work, queue control is thin, and there is no watched folder or URL submission worth the name, so nothing outside the application can hand it work. Fine for one file at a time, useless as a component of anything larger.

The one axis where it competes honestly. PAR2 files are the parity data that lets a client rebuild a post when some articles have expired or gone missing, and this client verifies, repairs and unpacks automatically, quietly, and by default. Damaged sets healed without being asked. The cost of that silence is visibility: when a set is genuinely unrecoverable you get a failure rather than an explanation, and there is no log worth reading and no community thread to search. Good behaviour, no instrumentation.

It will fill an ordinary line, on Newshosting, with Newshosting’s connection defaults. That is the whole sentence. Because it cannot address any other server it cannot pool connections across providers, which is the single most effective speed and completion trick available to a standalone client: when one backbone is missing articles, a second account fills the gaps. This client structurally cannot do that. Rated against a client that can hold several servers at once, a ceiling of one provider is a low ceiling however fast the line behind it is.

Windows, macOS and Linux desktop builds, tracking each other reasonably closely, which is more than most bundled clients manage and is why this axis is not scored worse. What is missing is the half of the market that matters to anyone serious: no NAS package, no Docker image, no headless daemon, no mobile control. Three desktops is a respectable answer to the wrong question, because the machine that should be doing the downloading is usually not the machine you are sitting at.

None. Not thin, not limited, none. There is no public API, no RSS watching, no post-processing scripts and no integration with Sonarr, Radarr or anything else in the automation stack that both open-source clients treat as a first-class use case. The practical consequence is that every download starts with a human opening a window. If your idea of Usenet involves anything arriving while you are asleep, this axis ends the conversation and NZBGet or SABnzbd starts it again.

A full graphical application with no headless mode, so the cost is not the megabytes, it is the requirement that a desktop session stay logged in for anything to happen. NZBGet idles at roughly 42 MB on a Raspberry Pi with no screen attached; this needs a running desktop. On a modern laptop the overhead is unremarkable. On the always-on low-power box where a download client actually belongs, it simply cannot be installed.

The feature the whole product is built to advertise, and it does work: type, get results, click, download, no indexer account required. An indexer is a third-party search engine for Usenet, and skipping one is a real convenience on day one. What you are searching is Newshosting’s own index, which is good on mainstream material and visibly thin at the edges, with no way to add a second source when it comes up empty. A standalone client wired to one paid indexer will out-find it and keep out-finding it, which is the trade nobody mentions in the signup flow.

Clean, tabbed and unintimidating, closer to a download manager than to a newsreader, and a genuine strength. A newcomer is downloading within minutes and never reads a manual, which is exactly the brief and it is met. The options run out fast, and because there is no scripting layer underneath, running out of options means running out of product rather than reaching for the config file.

This is where the scoring turns. The software costs nothing extra and the software is also not yours: it unlocks with a Newshosting subscription and stops the moment that lapses. Compare like for like. SABnzbd and NZBGet cost nothing, work with every provider on this site and every provider not on it, and keep working when you switch. This costs a specific vendor relationship, indefinitely, and the vendor in question is not in our provider league table. Zero dollars with one exit is not a better price than zero dollars with all of them. Checked August 2026.

+ WINS
▸Integrated search gets a complete beginner downloading with no indexer account.
▸Automatic PAR2 repair and unpack works quietly and correctly.
▸Desktop builds for Windows, macOS and Linux, which few bundled clients match.
▸Nothing extra to pay while the subscription is live.
− LOSSES
▸Authenticates only against Newshosting, a provider this site no longer ranks. Switch and the client is dead weight.
▸No API, RSS, scripting or *arr integration. Nothing can be automated.
▸No NAS, Docker or headless build, so it cannot live on the machine a downloader belongs on.
▸Cannot pool a second provider, which is the standard fix for missing articles.
▸Its search cannot be supplemented, and is thinner than a paid indexer at the margins.
▸Closed source with no community, no scripts and no say in its future.
FINAL VERDICT_

The Newshosting Client is a decent piece of software doing an uncomfortable job: keeping you on one provider by being the thing that stops working if you leave. Choose it only if you are already a committed Newshosting subscriber, you download by hand a few times a month, and you value never seeing a settings page more than you value ever changing provider. Everyone else should skip it, and most people reading this are everyone else. Install NZBGet if your download machine is a NAS, a Pi or anything that should stay on and silent, or SABnzbd if you want the larger ecosystem and the friendlier setup, then pair either with the provider that actually wins on retention and price. The decisive point: both of those are free in the sense that matters, which is that they come with you. Evaluated August 2026.

The efficiency king: an open-source NZB downloader written in C++ that does what SABnzbd does in a fraction of the memory, which is why it lives on routers, ancient NAS boxes and single-board computers. Abandoned by its original author in 2022, revived by a maintained community fork, and still free.
